INKLUDED CHAMPIONS DIVERSITY IN PUBLISHING BY ACTIVELY WORKING TO TRAIN AND PLACE YOUNG PEOPLE FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS INTO THEIR FIRST PUBLISHING JOBS.

Through our programming, we support and embolden marginalized voices, collaborate with like-minded organizations,
and facilitate actionable discourse regarding the lack of diversity in our business. In doing so, we
make the literary community a more welcoming and aware space for all readers, writers, and industry professionals.

2022: YEAR IN REVIEW

2022 was one of continued achievement for INKluded as we not only placed academy graduates but saw alumni from our first classes get promoted.

We congressed the fourth term of Inkluded Academy. The Class of '22 boasted matriculants from New York to Tokyo. The curriculum remained robust, with day-long classes in agenting; editorial; managing editorial and production; publicity and marketing, royalties and contracts; and subsidiary rights and scouting. As has been the case for three consecutive years, our graduates had the opportunity to intern at Publishers Weekly.

Our organization continues to grow and garner support from the industry. Special thanks to Writers House and Hachette for their generosity, advocacy, and allyship.

2021: YEAR IN REVIEW

We’re pleased (but not satisfied) to report that three years into its existence, our flagship program, Inkluded Academy, has nearly an 80% placement rate. With more individual and corporate support, we were able to increase the stipend amount each matriculant received, grow our faculty, and enhance the curriculum with guest speakers. We also partnered with Publishers Weekly to provide an 8-week externship to the Inkluded Academy Class of 2021.

Inkluded also continued to play an invaluable role in the conversations around representation and racial equity in publishing by participating in university town halls, working with student groups, and providing one-on-one consultations to industry leaders.

2020: YEAR IN REVIEW

After a successful first year of Inkluded Academy that saw all our graduates placed in their first publishing jobs, we wanted to come back twice as strong in 2020.

With support from our allies (Writers House, HarperCollins, and Hachette), Inkluded Academy 2020 doubled both its student body and its faculty. We were also able to increase the stipend each matriculant received and provide each member of the faculty with an honorarium.

We also partnered with Publishers Weekly to provide the Inkluded Academy Class of 2020 with an 8-week externship in the career lane of their choice.

And, despite an 8-month hiring freeze, two members of the Class of ’20 have already been hired into the ranks of publishing.

As ever, Inkluded continued to participate in the important dialogue around diversity, inclusion, and representation in publishing. Our members sat on industry panels and addressed students of all ages.

2019: YEAR IN REVIEW

In 2019, Inkluded launched Inkluded Academy, a tuition-free publishing course taught by industry professionals to college graduates from excluded groups.

Six aspiring publishing professionals were selected from nearly 100 applicants to engage a curriculum that included practical training in agenting, editorial, managing editorial, production, publicity, marketing, scouting, and subsidiary.

Over the course of seven Saturday sessions, the matriculants not only came to understand each of these publishing roles and how they interconnect, but also learned best practices for how to effectively support these roles.

Each matriculant was assigned a mentor from Inkluded’s membership to provide guidance on coursework, career counseling, and networking opportunities. Additionally, matriculants received training in customized cover letter and résumé writing, as well as individualized job interview coaching.

Inkluded Academy has an 83% placement record. So far, our graduates have landed jobs at HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Workman. They work across a range of occupations including marketing, production, and contracts.

 2018: YEAR IN REVIEW

In 2018, Inkluded focused on our administrative and organizational goals to secure our official status as an incorporated nonprofit organization. With this new standing under our belt, we are excited to continue supporting like-minded organizations in the industry, as well as offering new opportunities and events to promote a more diverse publishing community.

MARCH 2018: INKLUDED COMMUNITY READING + BOOK DONATION

We held an event at Writers House featuring readings by Hafizah Geter, Torrey Maldonado, and Ashley Lauren Rodgers. Additionally, we encouraged attendees to bring book donations. We successfully gathered and donated 1,000 books to New Alternatives for Children, a nonprofit that supports families who are caring for special needs children at home.

OCTOBER 2018:

Inkluded was officially granted our 501 (c) 3 status, recognizing us as a nonprofit organization!

DECEMBER 2018:

As a nonprofit organization, we officially became incorporated in New York City. This status legally extends our programming and fundraising abilities, and allows us to directly assist candidates seeking publishing opportunities.
